Unfortunately though, his routine checkup at the vets uncovered a heart problem, caused most probably by his malnourishment, so Ben wasn’t able to be put up for adoption.
Luckily for him we had a queue of would-be fosterers for this wonderful lad and he now lives in Salisbury with four other ferrets and is a firm favourite at every show he attends
In August 2009, Dawn our Wiltshire volunteer received a call mid-morning from a food distribution company to say they had a stray ferret and could STARescue take it in please.
When they were asked when was convenient a long explanation ensued. Apparently one of their delivery drivers had opened up the back of his lorry on his first drop off and found the ferret in there. It was assumed he had climbed in while the lorry was being loaded at the Swindon depot but the driver was now in CARDIFF.
The driver had a lot more deliveries to make in South Wales before returning to Swindon so wouldn’t be back until early evening so could he be given some advice on how to care for the stowaway in the meantime. Plenty of water, meat and some form of containment was advised and a phone call arranged so that Dawn could be on hand for his return.
On his travels around South Wales Ben had plenty of cuddles, destroyed at least 4 cardboard boxes, shared the driver’s kebab for lunch and had a whole chicken breast to keep him going. He was given water and lots of attention at every delivery stop and christened Ben by the driver's mate.
We don't get many ferrets in who need fostering, but those that we do we look to home with experienced ferret owners who are able to deal with the extra care that poorly or elderly ferrets need.
If you feel you could help foster a ferret please contact us.
Who knows you may be just the person one of these special ferrets needs.

Sadly Ben passed away today.
He will be missed by everyone, especially Suzie and Andy who had fostered and cared for him so well.
Sleep peacefully little man.
We get between 150 and 200 ferrets each year through the rescue. We receive no support from the Government, and rarely receive assistance from other organisations who pass ferrets or other small animals onto us.
Ben was extremely thin and undernourished when Dawn collected him but within weeks was turned around and grew into a lovely, laid back cuddle-bum.
So we rely on the generosity of people to help raise funds to pay for food, vet bills and transport costs. If you would like to help by making a donation (every penny helps), simply click the Donate Now button above. You can also help in other ways...
